How To Deep Clean Your Car Interior, Step By Step
A practical order of work for cleaning a cabin properly: clutter first, surfaces top-down, then vacuuming and mats.

Cleaning a car interior does not require special skills. It takes time, patience, some common cleaning products, a vacuum and a few microfibre cloths.
Step 1: Find shade
Working in direct sun is uncomfortable and reduces how well cleaning products perform. Heat can also cause products to react, stain or damage interior surfaces.
Step 2: Remove rubbish and clutter
Take a bag and gloves, and clear out packaging and rubbish, including from the boot. Check under the seats and in the seat cracks — a reliable hiding place for crayons and wrappers if you carry children. Remove anything non-essential that has accumulated.
Step 3: Clean interior surfaces
Work from the top down, since debris falls and can be vacuumed afterwards.
- Wipe the dashboard with a microfibre cloth, paying attention to the steering wheel, gauge cluster and gear shift where dust and hair collect
- Change cloths or turn them frequently so you are not spreading dirt around
- A soft toothbrush helps around climate controls and the gear shift
- Use glass cleaner and microfibre on interior glass. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, which can damage plastics and tinted film, and work in small sections to prevent streaking
Step 4: Vacuum thoroughly
- Remove the floor mats so they can be cleaned separately
- Vacuum the seats before the carpet, using a slim attachment for cracks; pressing down on the seat helps reveal hidden crumbs
- Vacuum air vents, the base of the windscreen and the rear deck
- Vacuum the floor, including under the seats and between the seats and bodywork — sliding the seats forward and back helps you reach everything
- Vacuum the mats before refitting. All-weather mats can be hosed, brushed and left to dry
Final check
Refit the mats and any pieces you removed, then look for missed spots or stubborn marks. Melted crayon can be chilled with an ice cube to make removal easier. Persistent stains may need a specialist product — or a professional.
